El Románico acompañó a la Reconquista en su avance hacia el sur y en la repoblación de la cuenca del río Tajo, por lo que su desarrollo estuvo intrínsecamente ligado a la situación de guerra y frontera que caracterizó estas tierras. Esta circunstancia de inestabilidad política y fronteriza afectó a las tierras de Guadalajara durante casi dos siglos y perduró hasta el año 1085, cuando Alfonso VI conquistó Toledo, dando así inicio a un nuevo período de repoblación que afectaría a las sierras altas del norte de la provincia de Guadalajara. Este se sustentó en torno a la plaza de Atienza y se intensificó tras la conquista de Sigüenza en 1124 y la de Molina de Aragón en 1128. En este sentido hay que destacar que el proceso de repoblación se llevó a cabo principalmente con gentes del norte que posibilitaron la llegada de las influencias románicas de esta área, convirtiéndose en una zona de expansión natural del románico segoviano y soriano.
En cualquier caso, la instabilidad continuó jugando un papel importante en la provincia de Guadalajara hasta la llegada al trono de Alfonso VIII, quien favoreció el establecimiento de la Orden de Calatrava en Zorita y que conquistó la ciudad de Cuenca en 1177, iniciándose ya de manera definitiva la repoblación de la cuenca del Tajo y la pacificación del territorio, requisito indispensable para la recuperación económica y la construcción de las primeras iglesias románicas (Nieto et al, 1991). Por tanto, el de Guadalajara es un Románico tardío, construyéndose edificios en este estilo hasta bien entrado el siglo XII. Así, la repoblación de la zona trajo consigo la ansiada seguridad territorial, el crecimiento demográfico, la roturación de nuevas tierras y la creación de nuevos núcleos de población junto con el desarrollo de los ya existentes. Todo ello se tradujo en la construcción de más de doscientos edificios de estilo románico.
La ya comentada cronología tardía del Románico en Guadalajara permite explicar la existencia de edificios con planta y estructura románicas pero con algunas formas ya protogóticas como los arcos apuntados doblados y las bóvedas de ojiva, como puede apreciarse en las iglesias románicas del Tajuña y en algunas del Tajo (Nieto et al, 1991). Pese a ello, las tierras de Guadalajara participaron plenamente del desarrollo y expansión que la época románica significó para el occidente europeo.
En Santa Coloma de Albendiego tenía su sede una pequeña comunidad de monjes canónigos regulares de San Agustín, existente ya en 1197, pues en esa fecha les dirigió una carta el obispo de Sigüenza, don Rodrigo, eximiéndoles de pagar diezmos e impuestos y haciéndoles donación de tierras y viñas para su sustento. Ellos fueron quienes a finales del siglo XII levantaron la iglesia de Santa Coloma.
Se trata de un edificio inacabado, con añadidos posteriores del siglo XV. Lo primitivo del templo queda en la cabecera, con una tipología excepcional en el ábside y dos absidiolos. El ábside principal es semicircular (aunque su planta tiende a lo poligonal) y divide la superficie en cinco tramos por cuatro columnillas adosadas, que hubieran rematado en capiteles si se hubiera completado la obra. En los tres tramos centrales del ábside aparecen ventanales abocinados y formados por arcos de medio punto en degradación de gruesas molduras lisas que descansan sobre cinco columnillas a cada lado. Estas ventanas llevan unas caladas celosías de piedra tallada que ofrecen magníficos dibujos y composiciones geométricas de raíz mudéjar. Estos detalles mudéjares de la iglesia de Santa Coloma demuestran el entronque con lo oriental que tiene el Románico castellano. En el resto de la cabecera, el templo ofrece a ambos lados del ábside sendos absidiolos de planta cuadrada, en cuyos muros aparecen ventanales consistentes en óculos moldurados con calada celosía central, con un par de columnillas con basa y capitel foliáceo.
A ambos lados del presbiterio se abren sendos arquillos semicirculares, que dan entrada a las capillas primitivas, escoltadas por pilares y capiteles muy bien conservados.
La iglesia no se concluyó de acuerdo con el plan primitivo, seguramente proyectado con tres naves. Tras cerrarse la cabecera a finales del siglo XV, se terminó el templo dotándole de una única nave con muros de mampuestos, techumbre de madera y pavimento de lajas de piedra apenas labradas. La puerta de acceso es de estilo gótico, se abre al mediodía a través de un arco rebajado con decoración de cardinas y capiteles vegetales y geométricos. En los pies del templo se levanta la espadaña, de silueta triangular, con tres vanos de medio punto, construida en una fecha posterior (aunque algunos autores la califiquen de románica).
